Good ol’ potlucks, who doesn’t love them? We love them so much at New Hill that we’ve placed them in our monthly rhythm. This means that every First Sunday, which is Family Sunday, you can expect a family style potluck.
Why do we call them ‘family’ potlucks?
The reason we call them family potlucks is because we don’t just believe we are a family, we know it.
First off, if you simply attend New Hill, know that we value you. We love seeing you every Sunday, and the Sundays you miss well, to be quite honest, it stinks because we miss you! You have become, as Paul says in 1 Thessalonians 2:8, dear to us.
Secondly, if you’re a member at New Hill, then you understand the implications of the Gospel. That means you fully understand that together, by the blood of Jesus, we have not only been reconciled back to God, but adopted into a family of believers from every tribe, tongue, and nation. Not only that, but we’ve been called to do life with some of those family members in what we call the ‘local church’.
So, simply put, WE ARE A FAMILY!
Why do we call it a Potluck?
Well, we hadn’t originally, but we are now! Potluck best explains the vision behind what is being done. These meals are meant for everyone who is able to bring a dish or so, preferably enough to feed your family and a little more (I’ll explain this in just a second).
What if I am unable to bring something? If you cannot bring something because of some financial restraint, then no worries! These meals are meant to be a blessing.
The purpose of our Family Potluck
The purpose is two-fold. We have thought about this with intention, so know that when we gather, it’s with purpose.
First, these meals are meant to be a time of fellowship. This life is flying by and each day passes at the blink of an eye. While there’s no way to stop life from continuing, not sure why we’d want that, we can slow it down and intentionally enjoy time together. These meals have been a blessing to me as I get to witness firsthand the work of God in our church’s life. People with different interests and backgrounds sitting down and breaking bread together. It’s a small glimpse at eternity!
Lastly, these meals shall be a blessing! When you see the potluck date coming up, think outreach. It’s not only blessing anyone in our church who may need the extra meal, it’s an opportunity to invite someone in your life to come and eat. Not only is it a chance to allow them to eat, but also to meet your church family, fellowship, hear and see the Gospel, and maybe breakdown some walls they have up with you, christians, or the Church in general.
What if we saw the First Sunday of the month as that outreach opportunity to model to the kids (because it’s family Sunday) and our guests what it means to live in community with people, sacrificing some extra time on Sunday, and even some resources to put this meal on? What if there was such an abundance of food that those in need and some guests could take it home? What if when they reheated that meal for lunch on Monday the Lord brought to their remembrance the blessing they received from the meal and the love that they were shown by us Christ-followers?
Consider this an ongoing ‘community focused’ outreach and in-reach event where we take the time to break bread with sinners and saints alike.
